Regional Market Towns Award winners

19th July 2010

The regional winners of the Market Town Awards have been announced – winners include Stourport Forward, a previous winner of RegenWM’s Prizes.

Stourport’s success came in the Partnership and Strategic Working category, where they continued their renovation of the historic canal basins with the aim of creating an interactive heritage tourism destination.  An annual event programme has been developed and, alongside the Tontine Stable Heritage Room, displays in the once-derelict Old Ticket Office include ‘Smells of Old Stourport’.  By arranging for passengers to be met by a costume guided walk, the partnership was able to persuade the Edward Elgar River Severn Cruise Boat to reconsider a plan to exclude Stourport as a destination.

The overall winner, and winner of the Business and Economy category, was miEnterprise, a social enterprise enabling people with learning difficulties and other disabilities to set up in self-employment in a supportive environment.  The project has been developed in close collaboration with JobCentre Plus and HMRC.

The winner of the Social and Community category was the Spa Youth Zone project in Droitwich Spa.

The Action for Market Towns website includes full details of all the winners.
